I've always had a burning passion for music. I believe I got my soulfulness from being raised in a gospel church where my single mother and I were the only white people. When I was in 4th grade I got a karaoke machine for Christmas. I would sing for days, recording myself and listening back thinking, "I could do that better". I would imitate different voices from all different styles of artists and bands. Growing up, my life was tough. I didn't have a father, and my mother was a drug addict. So my grandmother, who was an alcoholic, raised me. Never having money growing up was also a struggle. My mother got off drugs when I was about nine years old, and when I was about thirteen years old, she had a nervous breakdown and stayed in her room with the window curtains closed. So, at that point, I had to raise myself as well as her. There was never much food in the house, but I still had that karaoke machine. So I would just sing. When I was in 6th grade I started going to a different church. One of the leaders at the church started to hang out with me and we would water ski and do tons of stuff I never got to do. He had a successful business and decided to pay for me to go to a private school that had music classes. He was what you call a father figure to me. In ninth grade I wanted to take bass guitar class, so I got a bass for about $200 and didn't eat that month except Top Ramen. My two best friends and I started a punk band where I was their bass player (still didn't sing). I would go to hardcore music shows almost every weekend and go in the mosh pit. I loved music that was hard and angry and nothing else. One day at a show I didn't go in the mosh pit. I think I just wasn't that angry anymore, and that music lost its flavor because all it had was anger. When I was a senior in high school I found out about this vocal coach Joni Wilson, and somehow got the money to take a voice lesson from her. Before taking lessons not even my closest friends knew I could sing. After about four lessons I sang the National Anthem at a basketball game, then shortly after won first place at my high school talent show. It was a great start. I have always used the creative side of my brain, and don't have much else on the other side. I didn't do that well in school but I was in honors art. And before I sang, I was voted most talented in the high school yearbook for my Michael Jackson dance impersonations that I did at earlier talent shows. But after I graduated I had no idea what to do. I wanted to sing but how, I didn't have songs, etc. So I went to college and learned about music. I hated it. I wanted to play not learn. I started playing the guitar cause I couldn't write songs with a bass guitar. I wrote my first song about three years ago. The songs on my CD "Seven Days" are the first songs I ever wrote. I love abstract thoughts, play on words, and double meanings. I don't like to state the obvious. I love music that makes you think but is also emotional. Music to me has to have conviction, I have to believe that people actually experience what they are singing about. Thats why I am thankful for my hard and hurtful past because I can mix it with hope and it gives me a larger spectrum to work with. Even though God really is the only hope we have, that doesn't mean I write all my songs about God. I don't write about the light (God), I write about what I see because of the light. So if I write a song about my future wife or my dog, I see it though that perspective. I love how I get to do what I always wanted to do with my life.
