Reigning from Harford County, MD, Tribe Of Ben combines an eclectic variation of styles. The band's primary focus, however, is improvisation. During live performances, the listener is taken on a musical journey that encompasses the true groove of music. Mark Hopkins, Greg Leary, Lee Park, ,Jeff Loyd, and Adam Huber make up the Tribe, which consists of two guitars, keyboards, bass, drums, percussion, mandolin, banjo, and the occasional djembe. They perform almost anything and everything with their own unique stylings. Coming from all different types of music backgrounds, including: The Beatles, Bela Fleck, Led Zeppelin, Medeski, Martin and Wood, and James Brown among many others, it is evident that Tribe Of Ben is very diverse. Lead Vocalist/Guitarist/Keyboardist Mark Hopkins says, 'We truly appreciate all music in general. We're inspired by any musician who can turn a couple of chords into a great song.' Tribe Of Ben's originals, mostly penned by Hopkins, are a reflection of the band's philosophy of appreciating life at its fullest. The lyrics are insightful and mystic, and the music creates an explosive texture of sound. Alien Hand Syndrome, the band's debut compact disc release, features seven of the band's early originals. Since its release in June of 1997, the band has written twice as many new songs that showcase their prolific song writing abilities. Tribe Of Ben recently recorded and produced their own self-titled cassette featuring ten new songs. These newer tunes do an excellent job of showcasing the band in their prime element, as all of it was recorded live in the drummer's basement. The band has been together since 1993 and has performed at a variety of functions over the years. A buzz in Harford County has been established due to several performances at private parties, festivals, fairs and a weekly stint at Einstein Brother's Bagels in Bel Air. Stemming into Baltimore, the Tribe has played at E. Jay Buggs (Fells Point), Faber's Inn (Middle River), Wilmer's Park, The Vault, and various shows at The 8x10. Due to these shows and the release of the CD, Tribe Of Ben has been featured on 98 Rock's (WIYY) 'Noize In The Basement', a local music showcase that airs on Sunday nights in the Baltimore area. The band has opened for ulu, Juggling Suns, Fat Apple, and Splintered Sunlight among many others. Over the past year, Tribe Of Ben has performed at several colleges including, Salisbury State University (MD), James Madison University (VA), and Lynchburg College (VA). During the next year, the band will be performing at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY, University Of Maryland, Penn State, George Mason University (VA), and other schools. Tribe Of Ben is truly an original, unique, and reliable band. Their performances capture the essence of the band: Improvisation. At many times, a song will segue into another song that is completely unexpected and will then segue back into the original. Spontaneity is the band's tour de force.
