    Cover It!
A few years back, a couple of Umphrey's fans from Tennessee named Chris & Susan started showing up at many of our shows, always making their way front and center and rocking out on the rail. It was only a matter of time until we became friends with this amazing pair of loving people. Over the years, Chris & Susan have come up with the most thoughtful, heartfelt gifts for the band and crew to show their appreciation for the enjoyment they found at our concerts. At Caribbean Holidaze 2008, Chris presented us with a CD that he had created called "Cover It!", a double disc set of Umphrey's McGee covers from the last few years, complete with cover art that Chris had spray-painted on a Tennessee wall, and artwork to support this factious release.

Chris passed away on August 20, 2009, leaving a void in the Umphrey's community that will never be replaced. In his memory, we'll be releasing his creation "Cover It!' this Monday, November 2nd at Noon CT exclusively on UMLive.net. Proceeds from sales will go to USTORM.org, a charity that Chris supported.

  • Stew Art Recap

    Greetings Friends

Sorry for the delay in recapping the inaugural S2 event but we wanted to wait until we had this video ready for consumption.  We think this will give you a better feel for just how all this Stew Art business works.

Needless to say, we had an absolute blast diving head first into the world of crowd sourced, crowd directed improvisation.  Many thanks to the group of you that joined us for this ground breaking event.  Your willingness to take chances with us (knowing the possibility of a train wreck) is thoroughly appreciated.  We are already contemplating many more ideas for the future but thought the first outing was a definite success.  I had the pleasure of talking to most of you after the show and was glad to hear most of you felt the same way.  Thanks for the valuable feedback on the event, we've taken many of your thoughts and comments to heart as we continue to plan new S2 shows.  Additionally, we had such a good time hanging out at the last event that we are going to extend the meet & greet a while longer to further mingle, take pictures etc.

As most of you probably know, we will be hosting the next event at the historic Crystal Ballroom in Portland, OR on Saturday, October 24th. Only 50 tickets are available and they go on sale manana so get'em while you can.  We feel like we have barely scratched the surface of this concept so each event is certain to grow and evolve.  Stay tuned for a date near you, or just get in the van! (Let's see.... we've hit the Midwest and West Coast. Hmmm... Where to next?)

So enjoy this short clip documenting the inaugural run.  Please pass it around to your friends and coworkers, post it on your blogs, facebook, tweet it, send it to your mom. We know she'll love it.  You get the idea.  Spread it!

Many thanks to Brett Saul who endured my "fun" list of edits while cutting this video.  His handwork is much appreciated.

  • Portland S2, Las Tortugas updates and Jam in the Dam Fly Away contest

A special thanks to the fans who attended the inaugural S2 event last weekend. We couldn’t have been happier with how the event unfolded. Ideas were submitted by texting descriptive words, phrases, and pop culture references (pretty much whatever came to mind), to the Umphrey's Mozes mobile interface. The suggestions were then filtered by our sound caresser Kevin Browning, and projected on a screen for the band to digest and turn into the next phase of the jam. We varied stylistically with suggestions ranging from “afternoon bus ride in Jamaica” to “drinking pina coladas…in a hurricane.” There was incredible interaction with the attendants and we look forward to the next S2 event, which will take place On Saturday, October 24th at the Crystal Ballroom in Portland, Oregon. Much like our first S2, doors will open at 3:30, with the event to start at 4:00 pm, lasting for an hour. We had so much fun on the first go around that we are going to make a little more time to hang out and take pictures with the S2 participants after the show. Tickets will go on sale Wednesday, October 14th, at 12:00 pm PT, and will be $99.00 each. There will only be 50 tickets available, so grab yours next Wednesday. Check here for more details.

The Omega Moos (featuring Brendan & Ryan, as well as Darren and Jamie from the New Deal) will be spending Thanksgiving weekend on the East Coast. On Friday, November 27th, the Moos bring their 80’s infused electro-rock to The Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, New York, and Saturday, November 28th, the Moos head to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where they’ll open for The Disco Biscuits at the Electric Factory.

Tickets are now on-sale for our NYE run in Chicago, which will include a special warm up show on December 29th at the Vic Theatre followed by two shows at the Aragon Ballroom on December 30th and 31st . Special guests will include Z-Trip on December 30th and Prefuse 73 on December 31st, as well as the return of our favorite horn section Mad Dog’s Filthy Little Secret, featuring our good friend Jeff Coffin. Will you be joining us for New Year's in Chicago? Text 'NYE2009' to 66937 to sign up for the latest text updates (and insider info) from UM HQ. By signing up, you'll be eligible for giveaways and special offers leading up to and during the shows. We hope to see you in Chicago for our 10th NYE in our hometown!

As we prepare for Caribbean Holidaze in Runaway Bay Jamaica December 10th through 13th, we are excited to share this dubbed out version of Turn & Run with you! The single will be available for download at umlive.net as well as iTunes, however you will be able to stream the track at www.umphreys.comMonday October 5th.

We are getting ready for our 2-show stint at Las Tortugas Festival just outside Yosemite at the end of the month. Last year we debuted a Halloween mash-up theme – music and costumes got the treatment at the Warfield, favorites including a Thriller / Another Brick in the Wall musical adventure, as well as costumes such as Ronald McDonald Trump (Andy) and Rick James Bond (Brendan). This year, we plan on continuing that theme with a few musical mash-ups, and we encourage you to join us by creating a mashed up costume of your own!

  • New Year's Eve in Chicago, Stew Art (S2) Series announced!

    Hello lovers of music!

As the conclusion of our September tour draws near, we are excited to announce plans for our yearly tradition -- New Year's Eve in Chicago! Over the course of the past nine New Year's celebrations, we have called many of Chicago's finest venues our home. For our tenth New Year's Eve in Chicago, we revisit two venues where we've had many memorable nights together in years past. We will celebrate the end of another great year beginning with an intimate show at the Vic Theatre on Tuesday December 29th, 2009. We then return to the Aragon Ballroom for the final two nights of 2009, Wednesday December 30th and Thursday December 31st . In true NYE tradition, we will be performing a three-set show on December 31st. Our friends at CID Entertainment will again offer special travel packages this year, which will include tickets to all three shows, posters, UMLive CDs from each show, a special NYE fleece, hotel accommodations at the James Hotel, and much more. Check out the full details about the CID Package below »

CID travel packages and three-show ticket packages go on sale via UMTicketing Wednesday September 23rd at 10:00 am CT. General on-sale for three-show ticket packages along with single-day Aragon tickets go on sale Saturday October 3rd at 10:00 am. Stay tuned for an announcement of support artists to be added, as well as further information on a late night series at the Kinetic Playground brought to you by our friends at Silver Wrapper Presents. Please note that tickets to the Vic Theatre will only be available via 3-show ticket purchases. We look forward to rocking another year-end extravaganza with all of you!

We're thrilled to introduce a brand new Umphrey's McGee interactive fan experience, the Stew Art (S2) series. Unlike any musical event to precede it, an S2 event is an experiment in crowd-sourced improvisation where 100% of the music performed at a S2 event will be improvised, and you're the ones who will serve as conductors. The band created this concept over the past few months, and we can't wait to debut it for you. For full details, please check out the S2 section below », and stay tuned for an announcement for the first S2 event in the next few days.

We hope to see you all very soon!

    Umphrey's McGee

    Stew Art Series (S2)

Have you ever wanted to "conduct" an Umphrey's McGee jam? Ever wished you could broadcast your thoughts to the band to help influence the direction of a Jimmy Stewart? Are you curious about the band's improvisational thought process during a jam and want to gain greater insight while participating directly? Well, here is your chance as we are pleased to announce the Stew Art Series (S2).

An S2 event is an experiment in crowd-sourced improvisation. One hundred percent of the music performed at a S2 event will be improvised, and you are the ones who will serve as directors. Using several communication mediums which could range from text messaging to prewritten cue cards to chalk boards you will kick out ideas, descriptive words, phrases, pop culture references . . . pretty much whatever comes to mind. These will be presented to the band who will compose jams on the fly based around those ideas, and ideas will be added to, changed, and deleted as the event progresses. For instance, a fan might toss out the phrase "frightened rabbit," causing the band the play a frantic, nimble jam and after a period of time, the word "rabbit" might get changed to "brontosaurus" which would take the jam in a heavy, slower direction (though the word "frightened" is still in play). Then perhaps the word "skydiving" morphs the "frightened brontosaurus" jam into a soaring, powerful piece of music that evokes the feeling of being airborne . . . until the phrase "without a parachute" gets tacked on which changes the jam into something else entirely. And so on. No one will have any idea where the music is headed, well, and that's all part of the fun. The event will also include a Q&A session to provide an opportunity to ask about what you're witnessing (or ask anything else for that matter). Fans will become a part of the music like never before.

To be clear, each S2 show is a TOTALLY separate event than the scheduled concert date and will be sold as a separate ticket getting a ticket to S2 does not get you into the show later that night (and vice versa). The S2 experiment is just that, an experiment. We view this as an opportunity to explore methods of band and fan interaction and collectively discover what works best. The details of each event (cost, size, length, method of interplay) will vary depending on venue size, our costs, and the goal for each experience. But space will be extremely limited as intimacy is paramount. Some of those details will be made public before each show while others will remain a mystery until the show unfolds. We want you to help us determine how the events can best evolve and grow to their potential.

As part of your ticket (which will actually be a custom laminate that will be different for each S2 event), every attendee will receive an autographed CD of the Stew Art Series they attend minutes after the event has concluded. The Q&A will also be included on the disc as we will be recording your questions for posterity (we are not sure if that's for your posterity or for ours). You will get to see some classic venues as you have never seen them, empty and in the day time. And on top of that you will get treated an entirely improvised light show by lighting designer Jefferson Waful. We will make sure you stay hydrated and even have some munchies to replace the calories you'll burn while pushing the band to explore new ground.

Expect an announcement about our first S2 event soon!
