The 1960's brought us flower-power, the British invasion, Motown, and introduced us to folk rock. Folk Rock, led by We Five, began as harmonic vocals, a melding of acoustic and electric guitars, folk music, rock and a bit of jazz. Mike Stewart (Brother of Kingston Trio member John Stewart), and Jerry Burgan founded the group originally called the Ridgerunners in 1960. They performed under the name Mike Stewart Quintet (MSQ) but changed it to We Five the night they appeared on the Hungry I in San Francisco in 1965.
We Five's first Album was entitled "You Were On My Mind". This song was written by Silvia Fricker of the folk duo Ian and Silvia. "You Were On My Mind" became the bands million selling song that placed ..2 on the Billboard Charts and helped nominate the band for a grammy of best new artist of 1965. "You Were On My Mind" begins with a nine second drum intro than you here Beverly start to sing "When I Woke Up This Morning, You Were On My Mind". They recorded a total of 6 albums and have appeared on TV shows including Hullabaloo and Shindig.
We Five had many other hits including "Caste Your Fate to The Wind" and "Make Someone Happy" We Five originally recorded "Lets Get Together" before The Youngbloods recorded it in 1967. We Five was also the first bad to live and record in San Francisco as well as write and perform music for Coca Cola. We Five officially broke up in 1967. Mike Stewart passed away in 2002. The Band now consists of original band member Jerry Burgan, his wife Debbie, their son Chris, Ray Scantlin, And Terry Rangeno.
