  • Jon's latest Blog: "The Falcon Cometh..."

    Hello everyone, hope you're well.

Between watching the Balloon Boy drama unfold and making cups of tea we've been busy writing and rehearsing up some new tunes this past week. My personal favorite out of the bunch is called "Warrior."

I have been fascinated by the whole Balloon Boy story.  I watch the interview with the Heene family six or seven times a day and it still shocks me. It's just so entertaining to watch such blatant, desperate and feeble lying. What kind of unemployed, fame-thirsty idiots are these people? Thinking they could fool us! Well we showed them didn't we sheriff?

When you think about it the Heene's really didn't map out their plan very well. Ever heard of a phone call being traced Mr. Heene? Turns out the first call he made after the balloon took off was to a news agency to let them know they had better get a chopper in the air stat.  As an afterthought he told his wife to call the emergency services to make them aware that their child was in a UFO.

Mistake number one: You should make it appear that your child's safety is paramount.

We all know the golden rule is not to work with children or animals on live television and the parents got what they deserved when Falcon went off script and blew the whistle on them during their interview with Wolf Blitzer later that night.

    Then, the next morning:

"But I thought lying was wrong daddy?" said Falcon as the Heene family hung out backstage before their appearance on the Today Show.
"Shut up man!" snapped Richard. "We can still make this work."
"It's over father," said Rio. "Just face it. You've made a fool of us all. I beg you, come clean and maybe they'll let you off with just a warning. Please father. For us."
"No!" said Richard as he dipped a carrot in some hummus. "I want us to follow through with the original plan."
"This is making me feel ill daddy," said Falcon. "The doctor said I'm suffering from nervous exhaustion. I think I may be sick during the interview."

Mistake number two: Children can't keep secrets.

During the family's interview on CNN on the night of the incident Richard Heene said that his family wanted to be left alone and that they "weren't even going to do this interview" but then the next morning they appeared on the Today Show doing yet another interview.

Mistake number three: Don't pretend you're not in it "for the show" and then agree to do interviews on numerous television shows because people will think you're lying.

    Hello there, hope you're well.

We're all good holed up working on new material which is sounding rather splendid.  We're missing the road though and cant wait to get back out there.

For all you Major League Soccer fans, keep an ear out for our song Champion on ESPN and ABC programming.

The song will be used in bumps, teases and montages for each show from now until the end of November when the MLS season reaches its climax.

  • ***Ribs 'n' Rings***

Hello one and all, hope you're well and enjoying this taste of summer we're being served today. It's 75degrees and sunny here. Beautiful.

So this time last week Coyle and I took part in the Hollywood United 5-a-side tournament at Chelsea Piers here in New York City. On our team we had Skeet Ulrich, Greg Lalas, Donal Logue and an ex-Cameroon international goalkeeper guarding the rear.

We played and won our first two games convincingly and made it through to the final where a tightly fought game resulted in a 4-4 draw (that means tie to you Americans!). The game went into extra-time (I think you call this one over-time) and we went on to lose 6-5. Our hearts were broken... but that's not all that was broken. In a clumsy and late challenge somebody floored me and I found out yesterday that my lowest rib has been fractured.

So right now I'm dosed up on painkillers and watching the Lord Of The Rings trilogy on TNT. It began at 11.15am this morning and ends at 11pm tonight. Do they really need to be so long? I mean, I know there's commercials involved but they're still very, very long films. Gandalf has just told the Dragon that he "Shall not pass!" and I think he means it. The Two Towers is definitely my favorite of the trilogy. I think the Battle of Helms Deep is the best battle scene in movie history, even better than the Battle of Hoth in the Empire Strikes Back. And that's saying something. I think if I were a kid again Gollum would give me nightmares. Just one more point I'd like to make about The Lord Of The Rings before I move on: It's more of a question actually, it's something that's troubled me for years: Why do the Orcs have Cockney accents?

We're currently mixing some of our finished new songs before we go back into the recording studio to lay down some more tracks. It's sounding great and we can't wait for you guys to hear them. For those of you attending our show at The Southpaw in Brooklyn a week on Tuesday (April 28) we'll be performing one or two of the new ones acoustically. It's an exclusive folks! It's at 8pm and the cost is ten bucks. It's a great line-up of music all night long. All night. All night long.

Someone on Lord Of The Rings just said: "MALcontent." Another word that begins with MAL is MALnutrition. Both bad words, as is MALicious. I think the drugs for the ribs are kicking in.

Take care everyone and have fun in the sun,
    Jon. x

I was going to upload a couple of pictures that Mat took at the football last weekend but imageshack doesn't want to play with me today. You can check out some pics from the event if you click on the link below. Somehow I managed to evade the photographer but I swear I was there.

  • *** Football and things ***

Hello there, I hope you are all well.

Coyle and I just watched his team (Manchester City) lose 3-1 in their
UEFA Cup tie against Hamburg. He's very upset but being very brave.

Currently, we're still holed up in the studio working hard on some new
material, some of which we'll be performing acoustically for the first
time at our show at the Southpaw in Brooklyn on April 28th. We haven't
played in Brooklyn before so we're really looking forward to it. See
    some of you there.

We've uploaded a two-minute video for you to check out on our kyte
channel. The footage is from November and December last year and will
give you a little taster of what life is like on the road with Your
Vegas. There's dressing room banter, views from the tour bus and
hanging out in hotel rooms. Enjoy.

Coyle and I will be playing in an exhibition game for Hollywood United
on Saturday here in NYC. I guess they were suitably impressed with our
skills back in November. I'll let you know how it goes.

    Take it easy,

    Jon. x

  • *** SXSW Recap ***

    Hey everybody, hope you're well.

So we're somewhere on the long road from Austin back to NYC and I thought I'd give you a little SXSW recap as I listen to the soothing sounds of Otis Redding.

As usual SXSW was an action-packed and sun-drenched, fun-fueled and music-making weekend and my compatriots and I are returning home tired. Mat in particular is suffering today after a late night on the town. He's fast asleep now, dead to the world, God bless his little cotton socks that are black and white stripes.

On Friday we performed at the Beauty Bar on 7th Street at the West Rocks event. When we arrived at the venue I recognized it because we partied there one night early last year with our friends Switches but I didn't realize it was that place until we arrived there. We were on the outside stage, although we were covered by a tent, but I think this made it feel even hotter. We played a short 20-minute set and rocked the joint hard. After our set we stayed and watched two other great bands: Semi Precious Weapons and Juliette Lewis and the New Romantiques.

As the afternoon turned to early evening the free alcohol was flowing through the streets of Austin and everybody was having a good time, especially the elderly man wearing a pink dress, high heels and a pink wig we saw staggering down the road. We spent the rest of the day doing a few interviews and then we met up with different friends who were in town and exchanged touring stories and anecdotes over a few ice cold beers.

On Saturday we weren't onstage until after midnight so the day was spent watching bands and trying to resist the temptation to drink. Asteroid Galaxy Tour are ones to watch.

6th Street was pumping by the time we took to the stage in Maggie Mae's at 1am. Youth Group had warmed the crowd nicely and we were ready to rock. We debuted a brand spanking new song that doesn't even have a name yet so I can't tell you what it's called. I can tell you that Coyle plays the Mandolin on it though.

After the show we hung with friends for a bit before heading back to our hotel for some well-earned and much-needed rest. And that brings me nicely to where I am now, somewhere in Arkansas, I think. Only 1347 miles to go!

    Free, Peace, Sweet.

  • *** Studio Update ***

Hello everyone. Hope you're well.First off, I'd like to congratulate all the Americans reading on your choice of the 44th president. Mr. Obama is clearly a great man capable of great things. Although he has a tough task ahead of him I believe he is the right man for the job.

I thought I'd tear myself away from the recording process to let you know that we're doing well and are excited about our new material. Although we love touring and were disappointed to have to cancel in February we are grateful to be back in the creative environment of the studio. I am really enjoying watching and working with Mal and feel very lucky to be in a rhythm section with him. (I always forget how to spell rhythm, I think what throws me is that there's no vowels). We're currently in the process of doing drums and bass, which always go down first, then when Mal and I are done, the tracks get layered with guitars, keyboards, and finally vocals before the whole thing is mixed. After we're done Mal and I will spend our time having tickle fights.

After we've finished up in the studio we will be heading to Austin, Texas in March where we'll be appearing at the SXSW festival. Stay tuned for dates and times. We'll also be playing a couple of warm up shows so keep checking back for those dates too.

    Live long and prosper,

    Jonny Vegas. x

  • ***Tour Blog 15: New Jersey***

Hello there everyone. I trust the tree is up, the presents are wrapped and the fridge is stocked? Good, then I'll begin.

Last weekend saw us come to the end of our touring road for the year in the US. We performed two shows in New Jersey: one in Atlantic City and one in Montclair. Unbelievably we'd never played in NJ until this weekend. Well, technically that's not true because we performed at the All Points West festival in Liberty State Park in the summer, but we'd never performed at a proper venue.

Saturday night we played at the House Of Blues in Atlantic City. We've played a few HOB's before and they're always great shows, they always have a fantastic atmosphere and this one was no exception. After the show we hit the roulette table and I'm happy to report that Coyle, Mal and I all walked away in profit. Mark and Mat aren't gamblers. They're sensible lads.

After we stopped spinning the wheel we headed to the Foundation Room for a party where Duran Duran drummer Roger Taylor was spinning some tunes. Good times not troubled times.

The next day we took our fuzzy heads to Montclair where we played at a brand new venue called the Wellmont Theater. It's so new it's not even finished yet. There's no backstage area so our dressing room was a trailer in the parking lot! We were sad to be playing our last show in the US in '08 but there will be plenty more to come in '09.

Now we're homeward bound and will be playing our final show of the year in our beloved hometown of Otley. We've played a lot of places this year and we're thrilled to be finishing '08 in our own backyard.

Next week I'll be doing a review of the year in Your Vegas's world. It will include some of my personal memories and thoughts, covering issues like why Mal drinks so much Muscle Milk and why Mat's begun wearing eyeliner.

Until then I'd like to wish you all, on behalf of the five of us, a wonderful Christmas and a prosperous new year. I hope Santa Claus brings you what you wished for. Be careful what you wish for...

    God bless us, everyone.
    Jon. x

  • ***Tour Blog: Sorry About The Wait ***

***TOUR BLOG 13: SORRY ABOUT THE WAIT!***
    Current mood: jedi

Seasons greetings to one and all.

First off, may I offer my sincere apologies for the delay in the posting of blog 13. We have been terribly busy this past week and haven't had a spare minute to log on and tell you what we've been up to since leaving the Shiny Toy Guns tour. Well, now I'm sitting in our dressing room backstage at the Air Canada Center in Toronto and having just finished soundcheck I have an hour to kill before we take to the stage. So here goes...

Last Monday we arrived in San Antonio, Texas and found ourselves full of excitement to be rejoining our friends Duran Duran on the second leg of their tour of North America. However, as you probably know the first three shows were canceled, as Nick Rhodes was suffering from an ear infection, and we found ourselves in Dallas for three days. These three days were put to good use as we worked on some brand spanking new songs, which we're all very excited about. We also took time out to go and visit the Texas Book Depository. It was fascinating to see it in person as I studied the assassination of JFK in school.

On Friday we were happy to be playing live again in Houston. It was great to see some familiar faces down at the show and we enjoyed meeting and greeting you all at our signing after the set.

On Saturday we were performing in Mississippi for the first time. We were playing at the Beau Rivage Theater, a casino in Biloxi. The first thing I did when I got there was lose $25 on roulette. The show was great and once again it was great to see some friendly faces in the front row. After the show Coyle and I went to spin a little more roulette over a couple of beers.

The next day we performed at Eastern Kentucky University. It was a double headline show with us and a group called Forever The Sickest Kids. We really enjoyed the show and we'd like to thank everyone who put it together. You took good care of us, thanks a million billion.

Yesterday we were back opening up for Duran Duran in Columbus, Ohio. We've been there four times this year now so it's starting to feel a little like a third home to us.

And that brings me nicely to today. Mal has just come into the dressing room and informed me that the time keepers of this world have added another second to 2008. That's one whole second, or a sixtieth of a minute. I'm going to spend mine ghost hunting. Another fact I learned today is that Toronto is home to the worlds longest street, Yonge Street. It clocks out at a whopping 1178 miles. That's a lot of road folks.

Your Vegas have entered into the Christmas spirit and we've written and recorded a song for the season. It's called Christmas And Me Are Through and it's up on our player now so go take a listen and let us know what you think. The song will be availble to download on itunes very shortly. It's also going to radio so start hammering your local stations with requests for it.

Finally, In My Head will be featured on VH1's Celebrity Rehab this Thursday, December 11. So tune in and check it out.

    Time to tune my guitar,
    Peace and love,
    Jon. x
