Are all songs on GarageBand.com available for podcasting? Why can't I download some songs?

GarageBand.com gives each band control over their music. The band has four options to choose between:

  • OPTION 1: Anyone can download. If the band chooses this option, then that song is automatically eligible to be included in podcasts created and published with GarageBand Podcast Studio. However, if a podcaster wants to publish their podcast elsewhere (on their own server, for example), then the podcaster needs to get explicit consent from the band.
  • OPTION 2: Downloads disabled (streaming only). If the band chooses this option, then the song cannot be added to any podcasts (unless the podcaster gets explicit consent from the band).
  • OPTION 3: Only Fanlist members can download. Once someone has joined a band's fanlist via the "SUBSCRIBE TO FANLIST" button, they may download.
  • OPTION 4: Anyone can download and share (Creative Commons). Songs designated as "Creative Commons" are clearly marked as such with a logo on the song profile page. If the band chooses this option, then the song is automatically eligible to be included in all podcasts, including podcasts not hosted on GarageBand.com. (NOTE: if a band selects this option, it's "permanent." Once you've released your music to be shared freely, you can't hold us or anybody else liable for sharing it freely.)
For bands that don't want to give their music away for free, we have two suggestions for you to consider: (a) consider making just one or two songs downloadable for free, encouraging listeners to buy the rest of the CD, or (b) make available for free, a download special "radio mix" of the song that includes a voice intro/outro stating the name of the band and other such information. If this version of the song gets added into podcasts, it will serve as an additional promotional avenue for you.
