"Also caught these guys, among many others, at SXSW. I guess the best way to describe them is as the Black Crowes mixed with more hard rock. Driving heavy guitars (in some case slide guitars on some of their other songs) and a strong vocalist who sounds like a cross between Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes and Robert Plant - these guys rocked. Enjoy."
"Caught this band at SXSW this week. All of their songs that I have heard are characterized by driving drum beats, heavy, fuzzed out synths, and the lead singer's strong, powerful, brassy (maybe sassy as well?) voice. These ladies put on an amazing show, with the lead singer climbing all over amps and speaker stacks and displaying a charismatic stage presence while burning probably around 3,000 calories in a short period of time. iTunes has one of their albums if you want to sample. Enjoy."

""...'Cause we find ourselves in the same old place, singing drunken lullabies..." Some of you may have heard of this group before. I don't know how to describe their sound beyond Celtic / punk. What I do know is that they put on a killer show, having seen them recently in concert. Another great song of theirs is "What's left of the Flag." Enjoy."

"I wasn't a fan of the original Led Zeppelin song - which had somewhat manic, unfocused vocals. Maybe that was their intent, but it didn't sound right. However, this STP tribute song I think gets it right, and sounds more Led Zeppelin than the original. With the percussion, the guitar work and the smooth, flowing vocals, this reminds me of the same Eastern / Middle-Eastern almost sensual feel of a song like "Kashmir". Really, in my opinion, a great improvement and a emblematic of a better "vision" for the song. Or maybe it's just another overproduced saccharin filled soulless song. You decide. "
"Although this has been out there a long time, I still enjoy this song. This song was the first time I had heard an electric twelve string guitar, much less a twelve string played in a somewhat metal-like style. Combine that sound with sweet layered vocal harmonies and some pretty good fret work and you've got a good mix. However, the sample here on iLike seems to sound a little washed out compared to the original. Enjoy!"

"Unfortunately, iLike doesn't currently have a sample for this song, but I encourage anyone reading this to at least listen to the iTunes sample of this song. Nice, upbeat at times almost sassy song. Nice dobro, slide work, and Rissi has a great voice - it doesn't give out in the lower registers. Her voice also has a nice full sound, well rounded. She only has an EP out now, but a full record is supposed to follow soon. You don't have to be a fan of country to like her stuff because at least one other song is pretty poppy. Enjoy!"

"I heard this band for the first time yesterday at Day 1 of the Austin City Limits Festival. I liked them a lot and bought their albums. While there are times when they dial it back, the guitar, bass and drums have a heavy mix - at times being too heavy for the vocals (at least in terms of traditional mixing) -- creating a grunge / heavy metal / whatever other heavy genre you want "wall of sound." The vocalist has a flinty-edged raw power in her voice which really works well with the heavy (or thick / dense) instrument sound. I'm sure there are other groups to compare them to, but in some ways they make me think of a non-metal based version of Wolfmother with a sometimes angry chick singing rather than a high pitch voiced guy who wants to bring back the heyday of classic metal. It's the best I can do without coffee in my system early in the morning after being baked in the sun. Enjoy!"

"If you are a fan of raw soul and R&B, you may want to check Sharon Jones out. Like Amy Winehouse, she is a throwback to a vintage sound. However, unlike Winehouse, she can roll with some funkiness as well and her songs aren't as dark as Winehouse's either. She is backed by the Dap-Kings, who have recently been backing Winehouse when she isn't in rehab or scratching up her husband's face. The recording is raw, as opposed to the "artifical" fuzzed sound in Winehouse's album. Jones is supposed to be coming out with a new album soon. Enjoy."

"For those of you who aren't familiar with them, Cream was one of the greatest rock trios of the 60s. With the possible exception of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, who had arguably the greatest guitarist of all time, it was the greatest collection of musical talent in any one group. This is a live performance / reinterpretation of "Crossroads," one of the signature songs of Robert Johnson, considered by many to be the greatest bluesman of all time. Johnson supposedly gained his talent by going to the crossroads and selling his soul to the devil. In this firey reinterpretation, at times, all three musicians are soloing at the same time and it all still works and holds together somehow (Clapton on guitar, Jack Bruce on bass, and Ginger Baker on drums). Mind blowing. Truly amazing and a must listen for any fan of the blues or blues rock. "

"To the extent you do not like Country, this might not be for you. However, there is more than meets the eye (ear?) when listening to Junior Brown. While singing country is his main idiom, infusing his songs with cornball humor is a trademark of his style, along with each song almost telling a story. At the same time the guy is an amazing guitarist, able to play country, blues, or even surf guitar (!) along with the best of them (for instance he can rival Dick Dale, the King of Surf guitar at times). He is also great in concert, playing a guitar of his own creation, the "guit-steel" - part guitar, part steel guitar. I have heard him in concert several times; once he played Stevie Ray Vaughn's "Texas Flood" so well, there was not a dry eye in the house. Powerful. Plus, I just like being able to sing along with a song in my normal voice register for once instead of having to hit a falsetto. Simple pleasures are the best."

"If you are a fan of 60s style R&B, you might want to give this a listen, to the extent you are not aware of her. While a dark song, it is sent up with the old style backing bands like on Sam & Dave, etc. or the Blues Brothers band (Steve Cropper and others were in both bands) with a bright beat. She has good pipes and sings in the idiom well, without resorting to the overworked histrionics some of the performers today feel they have to do with every phrase. She is smooth and is comfortable enough in her own skin to do her thing while understanding her limitations. One of her other songs makes her voice sound similar to Shirley Bassey(?) who I think sang "Goldfinger" on the Bond film. She is supposed to go on tour soon. Enjoy."
"Unfortunately, iLike doesn't have a sample of this song, so you'll need to head to iTunes to hear it. However, if you are a fan of Freddie Mercury, this guy is a pretty close mark w the falsetto voice, etc. This song is good and very poppy and upbeat sounding in feel. Some of his other songs I have listened to have a pop/disco feel to them, which with that voice, plays pretty well. Enjoy."

"This is a cool song not only because of the interesting lyrics but the switch between sweet melody to a Soundgarden like rant. I send this out in honor of Chris Cornell leaving Audioslave. If you aren't familiar w his work in Soundgarden or Audioslave, you should check it out bec he can sing a melody or scream w a vibrato, which is pretty amazing. He also writes great songs. Hopefully now that Rage Against The Machine are back together at Coachella, maybe they will get back together for good now that Audioslave is done...."

"This is another interesting song, another rumpshaker w a Latin and/or Brazilian feel (especially recalling the drums from Paul Simon's "Obvious Child" which are so cool). If you ever get to see these guys in concert, they are amazing. The giant conga line / procession throughout the venue they are playing is awesome. If you like this also listen to "Who Discovered America" by these guys."

"If you like fuzzed out guitar and bass, power chords, etc. you might dig this. This song somehow manages to be a little of a rumpshaker while still conjuring a little image of '70s heavy metal. Most of these guys songs recall early metal in a way. You may have also heard these guys in an iPod commercial a little while back. Enjoy."
"This is a quirky song based off the original song by Bob Marley and then taken a different direction with a different feel and additional verses added. Still has some of the reggae and derivative musical styles included in it, though. Never ceases to a least get a smirk on my face. "I'm a Hero like Robert DeNiro..." Enjoy to the extent you weren't already aware of it."

"Let me preference this by saying I think the Beatles and Dylan represent some of the greatest songwriters of the modern era. In my opinion, few rise to their level of greatness. Having said that, these guys kind of sound Dylanesque and Beatlesesque, along with one or two other 60s groups on other songs. I am not saying they write songs as good as D or B, but they sound kind of like them. Hope you enjoy. They also did their own rewrite of ZZ Top's Balinese as well, if you are interested."

"To the extent you like Texas blues-rock, you should check these guys out. The rhythm section are the boys from Double Trouble, and the two guitarists / singers are Charlie Sexton and Doyle Bramhall II, son of SRV's best buddy. DB II also toured recently w/ Clapton and several of his songs were on Riding with the King by B.B. King and Clapton."

"The Meters knew how to lay down some funkitude and a serious beat. "Cissy Strut" is another good song by them."
Nov 16, 2006
"Hey, check out this song. To the extent you aren't familiar with these guys, they are a hilarious mash-up of mostly Led Zeppelin and Elvis done in a reggae style with an Elvis impersonator as the lead singer. Funny as well as good music."

"Smokey is greatness and has such a silky voice. This song rules! Listen to the bassoon puttering around throughout the song in the background. Genius."

"Great song, w some comedy, not only displaying Mr. Charles' mastery of his style, but also the old school way of playing with the crowd, having a conversation with them. A lost art."

Just a note to say I appreciate that you add descriptions to your "Songs iLike" section, like I do. Helps to get an idea about a song / artist when someone can be descriptive, more than just saying "This song rocks. Sounds good!" Thanks -- it's the reason I'm on iLike -- to discover and explore music!! :-)
