"George Jones sings this rockin' country tune with an inimitatable style that is purely George. A voice that is not comparable, George is quite possibley the greatest male singer in country music. His original version is more clear and less bogged down. check it out!"

"Ike & Tina Turner do the Otis Redding song justice in this 1973 live recording from the "The world of Ike and Tina :Live in Europe" album. The Driving, rough, R&B stylings drive this home. This version could have had another turn on the charts if given a chance. The church organ, pounding bass and great percussion make this one a must for R&B fans. Ike and Tina did otis proud. i can't get enough of this."

"Ray continued to record amazing country standards, which would influence so many other R&B/Blues artists to follow the same Which would include Tina Turner, Esther Phillips, Joe Tex, Candi Staton, and Aretha Franklin. With this song Charles keeps the country back drop and style and timing, and vocal arrangement, though he infuses, church in his phrasing, and his funky keyboards. He sings so "as a matter of fact" that one see's this is a real man. Ray isn't whining, he is stating. He sings this song so convincingly, and his version stands proudly along side George Jones'. This pounding version upholds the country stylings of the original recording, while still adding some attitude and soul as only the greats can. Blending the original with new. This song is one of my favorite songs of all time. Other great soul singers snging country are Tina Turner "Lovin him was easier" and Esher Phillips "Am I that easy to forget?""

"Ricky Skaggs, quite simply, could have the nicest male voice in country music. The greatest male singer in country music? It could very well be. Silky smooth, not a screech, phrasing, timing, lyrical delivery are impecable.Ricky takes this country ballad, and works his magic, singing it with so much country soul, it's painful, and remarkabley bright, the sweet tenor voice can deliver a soulful performance, and still remain bright sounding. This is such an interesting concept, singing painfully, full of desperation, but still sounding bright and warm? it takes remarkable country soul to accomplish something like this. "

"Van morrisons Gloria is perhaps one of the greatest songs of the 1960's. Blends grooving R&B beat and influenced vocals, with a strong rock sensibility. A perfect dancing tune one can hear his influence in the doors."
"This song rocks my world. Very seldom are two kinds of music blended together perfectly. John Mellencamp blends country and rock in this song just perfect. Traditionally country instruments Accordion, harmonica, and even a washboard are all blended to give this song a swamp rock feel. Mellencamps bright, smokey voice holds this opus together. The pounding drums give just the right amount of rock to the track, and makes one want to get down. The accordion gives the songs a New Orleans kinda feel. Easily one Mellencamps greatest performances."
"Dolly and Porter had a chemistry not matched by many duos in the music videos, George and Tammy, Ike and Tina, Marvin and Tammy had and indeed Dolly and Porter had it. This songs mornful lyrics and tempo along with Porter and Dolly's lyrical delivery give the song a sense of urgency and almost desperation. Very soulful."
"Perhaps one my favorite country songs. Dolly and Porters biggest hit, and they blend together beautifully. I sense an almost reggaeish beat, it grooves and is so bright sounding. The lyrics are uplifting, and are perfect sang by Dolly and Porter. Dolly's trembling, succulant soprano, with Porters smooth bedrock tennor. A wonderful country duet if there ever was one."

"For me this is for me the this could be Diana at her best. Belting, even growling, being a real soul sister, and dare I say singing the best version of this sone, next to Mavis Staples. Diana being a real soul sister. Amazing

"I often wonder how much more successful if Dusty had premium material like this presented to her all the time. She herself said the material offered her was not the greatest, and she always wanted more gritty stuff. Her signature tune "son of a preacher man" was originally offered to Aretha Franklin who turned it down initially, and when she heard Dusty's smokey, sexified southern soul version, decided it was worth a second gander and recorded and released her version in 1970. Though I love Aretha, no one will ever sing "Son of a preacher man" like Dusty. Her breathy, feminen, smokey voice is one of the sexiest in musics history. She has an amazing bed room voice, so sweet, so sensuous, so soulful. Dusty takes the Carol King song and sings it like no other. James Taylor or Carole King could never sing this song the way Dusty sings it. Her breathy, pure vocal performance is inspiring, and she sings it almost like a prayer. The piano plays sweetly behind her, and she gives a perfomance that is hard to follow. I believe if it had been promoted it could have been a major hit record."

"I never listened to this song to begin with, I was so caught up in her cover of "St. Louis blues" and then I heard the innate soulfulness of this song. Etta blends a feel good gospel tempo and mood, with southern soul raucaussness, and funk/disco. I was blown away, with Etta belting out Gospel shouts above a group of very talented back up singers.... Danceable and not too deep. A surprisingly happy, and light hearted track."
"Dolly Parton, could be my favorite female country singer. Her bright trembling soprano is voice of poignant beauty. Her take on this song, is so uplifting, so perfectly constructed. A perfect hybrid of country and soul gospel. Dolly handles this song, a song that could have easily been contructed for power house singers like Aretha Franklin. Dolly has a surprisingly powerful voice, and this song demonstrates that.

"This is one of the most passionate performances the Turners ever committed to tape. Ike plays the church organ quietly and soulfully as Tina sings this love song like a prayer. Her church training is evident, and her delivery sends emotional shivers up the listeners spine. The song builds until the final gospel laden finally, of epic proportions, up there with the expolsion of "Proud Mary". This soft kittenish side of Tina during the Ike and Tina years was seldom heard, but when heard it was and is very much appreciated. Tina Turner once again proving she could sing anything."

"In the words of Rasputia Latimore: "Sing that $h**!" perhaps one the most striking vocalists in most recent memory. Yolanda would have had a major career in popular, following the successes of Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston, but she has gospel in her soul. Open My heart has that classic gospel feel mixed with R&B and contemporary. The lyrics are so inspiring, and the melody so relaxing, and uplifting. "
"Dare I say it, This version of this song is my favorite version of this song I've heard. That voice, never faded though this album is fairly recent. All that power, soul, grit, and all held together by spiritual grace. The bassline, has a disco, funk quality, the drums have a "Rock Steady " feel, and Marion never loses site of the meaning of the lyrics she is singing. Not mournful, but rather a celebration of God's helping hand in GETTING OVER obsticles that fate throws at us.A great uplifting song. Easily one of the greatest songs in Gospel, Aretha and Clara, sing this wonderfully."
"Donny and Roberta made sense, if not a totally unusal pairing. Donny very soulful, very gospel trained in his piano playing style, vocal style. His voice was strong, thick, and rich, fully of buttery tones. Roberta on the other hand is often said to employ an almost (forgive me for racial stereo typing, I write only what I've heard and read) white sound, and style. Her voice, soft, in comparison to Aretha, Gladys, or Tina she has a much less earth Shattering voice. Her style less gospel enforced than Donny, and she doesn't do the trailing Donny does. But she is very soulful in a different way. They meet on such an amazing level. She is perhaps at her most spiritual on this song. The harmonies, and interplay are inspiring. The lyrics, and piano work are wonderful, one of my favorite songs from this amazing album.

"This is one of my jams, Sam and Dave their funkiest. That pounding drum beat, and great organ work...Sam and Daved second biggest hit, and a song I prefer much more to "Soul man""

"Tina is known the world over as the queen of Rock and Roll, and the queen of Gutbucket R&B. Her husky voice perfect for anything requiring some grit. She could breathe sexual fire into "Mary had a little lamb" However like all the greats she was a gospel singer before she started to record secular music. She returns to her gospel roots in this 1974 reissue. Off the bat , "Our Lord will make a way" spoke to me. She sings from the farthest depths of her soul, a testiment to her hard life, and she asks God "thats when i wonder, Lord, what have I done? to make my race so hard to run" she can relate. These words ring so true for her. Her vocal performance is passionate and very traditional. The only ciritque I would have is maybe they could have used some traditional gospel instruments. other great moments on this album are "Walk with me" , "Glory glory" and Ike's "Father alone""
"I thought this song, when performed by others was cheezy. Mavis turns this song into a gospel charged opus, and turns the redundant lyrics into essesntial elements in this song. She sings this song so soulfully, so faithfully, one knows she believes the lyrics and the entire album. The album is one of her best."
"Joan Osborne covered this, one Dolly's most brilliant and heartfelt songs. Joan sings tenderly, slightly throaty, and soulfully. This is the greatest version of this song I've ever heard, (and for me even better than that of Trio(Dolly, Emmy-Lou, and Linda R) The touching lyrics, and folk/country back drop is the perfect vehicle for Joans emotive to travel in."

"This is a song I always liked, it wasn't however, until recently that I became addicted to it. I find the guitar riff infectious, and this being the folk-iest of the Nirvana hit singles, I find it dance-able, groove-able and completely relaxing. Curt Cobain became imortal for me the day I bought my first Nivana cd last year. Get with the program eh?"
"One of my favorite songs ever. Ray blends hispanic cha-cha type rythms, with jazz influenced horns to create an amazing dance track . His voice gritty yet playful, and some of the most amazing soul music ever created. Perfect for dancing with that special somebody."

"An amazing take on the old freedom spirituals. The Soundclash harmonize wonderfully and perform this song with so much urgency and soul. At times solemn, and the next verse they are sweetly harmonizing, but intense all the same. This song proving the amazing talent, and calibre of this first rate vocal group, and not totally reliant on a good beat or lavish production, and can carry on in the steps of Sublime."
Feb 12, 2008
"This is arguably one of Tina Turners greatest vocal performances. She takes the Kris Kristoferson song to new emotional heights. She takes the country ballad, and injects some soul gospel into it. She tenderly sings the song like a prayer, and the Ikettes soothingly sing behind her. Subtley, soulfully she sings this song like no other before her. Keeping the country aspect and adding soul and black vocal power, as well as delivery. Like many singers of that time, Gladys, Aretha, and Candi, Tina sings country brilliantly, and this is proof."

"Recorded by Country singers Jerry Lee Lewis, and Charlie Rich, Esther recorded this song for her Atlantic Album "The Country Side of Esther Phillips" which for me is perhaps one of the greatest soul/blues albums ever recorded. With so many amazing covers, among them "Release me" (the Engleburt Humperdink song and [And Esthers Million selling POP#5 Hit]) "I can't help it (If I am still in love with you"(the Hank Williams Song) but the song that sent shivers down my spine was "No headstone on my grave" was practically written for Esther. She starts acapella, and the song has an almost spiritual like quality, and an intensity the only Bessie Smith among others can conjur up. She moves on with a slow piano and a spooky vocal acompaniment complete with a harmonizing soprano that adds so much drama to an already brilliant song....Esther than just sings from her soul. I say the song was practically written for Esther because it is a song of pain, something Esther carried with her. Some theorize it was these personal demons that led her to drink and expire prematurely. When Esther sang "No headstone on my grave" one believes her....a most soulful song and a testiment to her pain."
"Bill Withers is a genius, as a singer, songwriter, and all around musician. This song "Justified " was one of the most sexy, and rythmic sounds to come out of Esther Phillips. The grooving beat, R&B horns give the song a southern soul feel with Esthers almost jazz like vocals. Her vibrato has an almost Billie Holiday quality to it, even a Erykah Badu quality. The crisp, well arranged production is courtesy of Budah records, perhaps one of Esthers greatest pairings."

"Aretha never ceases to amaze me. Her voice to versatile, it can shatter glass, or become so breathy and feminen she is everthing that any female soul singer wants to be. The fine Gospel piano take on this track is perfect. The slight soothing hum of the church organ, the slow, steady romantic drum, and the ernest trumpets provide a perfect vehicle for Aretha to work with. She slowly, breathy, sensuous, and understated, she builds to a most splendid vocal climax. With an almost moaning, pleading finish...Lord have mercy, she is singing just for me....every man will feel she is singing to him, and every woman will feel she is singing for them...if you've every been in love or are in love this is quite possibley one of Arethas greatest vocal performances, and romantic songs she ever recorded."
Feb 02, 2008
"With a pounding drum, amazing piano work, reminiscent of piano work by Little Richard, Fats Domino, or Jerry Lee Lewis, and a voice, that has a bonifide sexual energy, a great grooving beat...God this song rocks..
"
"Gladys is best known for those amazing Gospel charged vocals, in this song we here a very kittenish Gladys, channeling her inner Ella. I think this is my favorite recording from this album. She starts off singing basically a capella, and moves into jazzy, oh so classy chops, and all the vocal splendor that is Gladys Knight....A very interesting merger, or hybrid of traditional Soul Gospel, and Jazz."

"When I hear this song I am thinking, this is one real soul sister. Mary has grit, something that most contemporary soul singers lack. This song is disco-ish in style, and gritty, Soul with the grease, as Tina Turner put it on her "What you hear is what you get album""

"Though this song was Aretha franklin's pop char Debut in 1961, and has since become Synonymous with her, Ruby's driving memphis soul version stands along side Arethas, with vocals registerings close to Tina Turner or Millie Jackson. Pounding bass lines, drums, and horns adding some drive to the track as a whole, all held together with Ruby's throaty blues wail."
Oct 13, 2007
"Wow, I stumbled onto Ricky Skaggs through country gospel Compilation, and I was amazed by that voice. Ricky's voice is delightfully bright, expressive, and oh so smooth. Honey has such an infectious hook, and that old schoo country feel. Good waltzing tune."
Oct 11, 2007
"The studio version of this song is awesome, a blues/jazz record, with amazing accompanyment. The live take is ok, but the instrumental accompaniment on the studio version is more organized, and much better quality."

"One of the best recordings this century. This recording is beautiful, lyrics make one feel that everything wrong in the world can work it's self out if the right people work at it. One of the few songs that brought tears to my eyes, out of joy. Amazing.
